Abstract Molecular tools have been employed to improve the knowledge about freshwater Neotropical fishes. Such approaches supporting studies of groups including species complexes such as Astyanax, one of the most diversified and taxonomically complex genus of the family Characidae. Here, we employed species delimitation analyses in four Astyanax species described for the upper Paraguaçu River basin, a drainage within Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion with high endemism. We implemented single and multilocus approaches based on two mitochondrial and one nuclear markers. Cytochrome c Oxidase I sequences previously available for Astyanax species were also added to our dataset. The single locus analyses showed A. epiagos, A. rupestris, and A. aff. rupestris as different Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs), while A. brucutu and A. lorien were grouped. However, the multilocus approach distinguished these two species and showed congruence for the remaining single locus results. Astyanax aff. rupestris was separated into two MOTUs using both approaches, highlighting the need for an integrative taxonomic revision including A. aff. rupestris. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the diversity of this fish group in the upper Paraguaçu, identifying hidden diversity and reinforcing the relevance of this hydrographic system as a notable hotspot for ichthyofauna biodiversity endemism.

Resumo Ferramentas moleculares têm sido empregadas para melhorar o conhecimento sobre os peixes Neotropicais. Tais abordagens apoiam estudos de grupos que incluem complexos de espécies, como Astyanax, um dos gêneros mais diversificados e taxonomicamente complexos dentro da família Characidae. Neste estudo, nós empregamos análises de delimitação de espécies em quatro espécies de Astyanax recentemente descritas da bacia do alto rio Paraguaçu, uma drenagem dentro da ecorregião Mata Atlântica Nordeste que apresenta alto endemismo. Nós realizamos abordagens de loco único e multilocos baseadas em dois marcadores mitocondriais e um nuclear. Sequências de Citocromo c Oxidase I anteriormente disponíveis para espécies de Astyanax foram adicionadas ao nosso conjunto de dados. As análises de loco único mostraram A. epiagos, A. rupestris e A. aff. rupestris como diferentes Unidades Taxonômicas Operacionais Moleculares (MOTUs), enquanto A. brucutu e A. lorien foram agrupadas. Entretanto, a abordagem multilocos distinguiu estas duas espécies e mostrou congruência com os demais resultados das análises de loco único. Astyanax aff. rupestris foi separada em duas MOTUs usando ambas as abordagens, sugerindo a necessidade de uma revisão taxonômica integrativa incluindo A. rupestris e ambas A. aff. rupestris. Esses achados contribuem para uma melhor compreensão da diversidade desse grupo de peixes na bacia do rio Paraguaçu, identificando diversidade oculta e reforçando a relevância desse sistema hidrográfico como um notável hotspot de endemismo da biodiversidade da ictiofauna.

Resumo A ecorregião de água doce Mata Atlântica Nordeste (NMAF) é reconhecida pelo alto grau de endemismo da sua ictiofauna, cujas histórias evolutiva e biogeográfica ainda são pouco compreendidas. Oligosarcus acutirostris é uma espécie de peixe de água doce endêmica da NMAF, que está distribuída em rios e riachos costeiros que drenam os estados da Bahia, Espírito Santo e parte de Minas Gerais, no leste do Brasil. Sua ampla distribuição em bacias atualmente isoladas ao longo da NMAF motivou este estudo, que teve como objetivos entender quais cenários estariam envolvidos na determinação do seu padrão atual de distribuição e contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da história biogeográfica da NMAF. Para isto, foram analisadas sequências de DNA nuclear e mitocondrial, a partir de amostras de diferentes localidades ao longo da distribuição da espécie, incluindo sua localidade tipo. No geral, as análises filogeográficas indicam forte estruturação genética na espécie, evidenciada principalmente pelo não compartilhamento de haplótipos entre a maioria das bacias analisadas. De acordo com os resultados da AMOVA, a distribuição atual dos haplótipos é melhor explicada pelas paleodrenagens costeiras do Pleistoceno. Os resultados obtidos também são utilizados para testar e complementar hipótese biogeográfica previamente proposta para as drenagens da NMAF. Abstract The Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (NMAF) is recognized for the high degree of endemism of its ichthyofauna, whose evolutionary and biogeographic histories are still poorly understood. Oligosarcus acutirostris is a freshwater fish species endemic to the NMAF, which is distributed in coastal rivers and streams draining Bahia, Espírito Santo, and part of Minas Gerais states in eastern Brazil. Its widespread distribution in currently isolated river basins along the NMAF prompted this study, which aimed to understand what scenarios would be involved in determining its current distribution pattern, and to contribute to a better understanding of the biogeographic history of the NMAF. For this, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences were analyzed based on samples from different localities along the species distribution, including its type locality. Overall, phylogeographic analyses indicate a strong genetic structure within the species evidenced mainly by the non-sharing of haplotypes between most of the basins analyzed. According to the AMOVA results, the current distribution of haplotypes is better explained by the Pleistocene coastal paleodrainages. The results are also used to test and complement a biogeographic hypothesis previously proposed for the drainages of the NMAF. Resumo: A bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia é a maior bacia localizada completamente no território brasileiro. O elevado nível de endemismo de sua ictiofauna foi atestado em vários estudos, com o alto rio Tocantins possuindo o maior número absoluto de táxons endêmicos da bacia Amazônica. Aqui, fornecemos uma acurada revisão sobre o conhecimento da ictiofauna da bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia entre 2000-2020; uma extensa lista das espécies válidas de peixes ocorrentes na bacia, assim como uma discussão sobre as maiores ameaças para sua ictiofauna. Dados sobre a diversidade da ictiofauna foram refinados por meio de buscas na internet. O mapeamento das Áreas Protegidas e das hidrelétricas foi realizado utilizando os arquivos de área ou coordenadas fornecidas pelas agências governamentais responsáveis. 751 espécies de peixes são atualmente conhecidas para a bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia. Um aumento considerável no conhecimento sobre a diversidade de peixes ocorreu nos últimos 20 anos em paralelo com significativas alterações antrópicas na bacia e seu entorno. As represas ao longo da bacia são consideradas a maior ameaça à ictiofauna. Embora a região hidrográfica abrigue diversas unidades de conservação e terras indígenas, estas não têm sido suficientes para garantir a preservação das espécies de peixes. Nossa compilação enfatiza que o alto rio Tocantins precisa ser considerado como área prioritária para a conservação das espécies de peixes. Algumas ações mitigatórias, que podem atingir resultados satisfatórios em relação à conservação da ictiofauna, são também propostas.

Abstract: The Tocantins-Araguaia River basin is the largest basin located entirely in the Brazilian territory. The high degree of endemism of its ichthyofauna has been revealed in several studies, with the upper Tocantins River having the largest absolute number of endemic taxa within the Amazon basin. Here we provide an accurate review of the ichthyofauna of the Tocantins-Araguaia River basin, based on collections made between 2000-2020, including an extensive list of valid fish species occurring in the basin and a discussion of the major threats to its ichthyofauna. Ichthyofauna diversity was further refined based on web searches. Protected Areas and hydropower plants were mapped using shape files or coordinates from the responsible government agencies. 751 species of fishes are currently known from the Tocantins-Araguaia River basin. A considerable increase in fish diversity knowledge occurred in the last 20 years, in parallel with significant anthropic alterations in the basin and its surroundings. Dams constructed along the basin are ranked as the major threats to ichthyofauna. Although the drainage-basin holds several conservation units and indigenous lands, they have not been sufficient to guarantee the preservation of fish species. Our compilation emphasizes that the upper Tocantins River must be considered as a priority area to preserve fish species. Some mitigation actions that may achieve satisfactory results concerning ichthyofauna conservation are proposed.

ABSTRACT The following letter, from a network of women zoologists, is a reply to the article of AlShebli et al. (2020), which suggests that female protégés reap more benefits when mentored by men and concludes that female mentors hinder the success of their female protégés and the quality of their impact. This contribution has two parts. First, we highlight the most relevant methodological flaws which, in our opinion, may have impacted the conclusions of AlShebli et al. (2020). Second, we discuss issues pertaining to women in science, bring a perspective of Women in Zoology and discuss how current diversity policies are positively changing our field.

Resumo A revista Neotropical Ichthyology lança o Volume Especial (SI) “Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity” com o objetivo de publicar artigos científicos relevantes sobre a atual crise da biodiversidade e a perda de diversidade de peixes de água doce Neotropicais no Antropoceno. O SI é composto por 22 publicações, sendo dois artigos de revisão e 20 artigos originais. Um total de 107 pesquisadores contribuíram com esses artigos, envolvendo 44 instituições sediadas no Brasil e em seis outros países. Os artigos publicados investigaram as principais atividades antrópicas e seus impactos sobre a diversidade de peixes, com foco especial na regulação dos rios, mineração, mudanças no uso do solo, aquicultura e pesca. Os estudos forneceram evidências sobre a perda de diversidade de peixes na região Neotropical, incluindo eventos de mortandade, alterações demográficas, contaminação, mudanças na estrutura das assembleias, perda de diversidade taxonômica e funcional, além da degradação de funções e serviços ecossistêmicos, e falta de ações efetivas de proteção e conservação. Os estudos foram conduzidos em rios, riachos, lagos e reservatórios de diferentes sistemas Neotropicais. Os estudos publicados neste SI representam uma amostra relevante da atual situação dos peixes de água doce na região Neotropical, reforçando a necessidade de revisão das políticas ambientais, ações de manejo e conservação, e prioridades socioeconômicas.

Abstract Neotropical Ichthyology promotes the Special Issue (SI) “Human impacts and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fish diversity” with the purpose of publishing relevant scientific articles on the current biodiversity crisis and the loss of Neotropical freshwater fishes in the Anthropocene. The SI is composed of 22 publications, being two review articles and 20 original articles. A total of 107 researchers contributed to these papers, involving 44 institutions based in Brazil and six other countries. Published articles investigated main anthropic activities and their impacts on fish diversity, with special focus on river regulation, mining, land use changes, aquaculture, and fisheries. Studies provided evidence about the loss of fish diversity in the Neotropics, including fish kill events, demographic changes, contamination, changes in assemblage structure, loss of taxonomic and functional diversity, besides the degradation of ecosystem functions and services, and the lack of effective protection and conservation. Studies were conducted in rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs from different Neotropical systems. The studies published in this SI represent a relevant sample of the current worrisome situation of freshwater fishes in the Neotropical region and call for urgent revision in environmental policies, management and conservation initiatives, and socioeconomic priorities.

Resumo: Este trabalho foi realizado a partir da avaliação do estado de conservação da ictiofauna de água doce do Estado da Bahia. Os dados de inventário e distribuição das espécies foram obtidos a partir da literatura científica especializada e de coleções ictiológicas representativas. Um total de 281 espécies nativas foi registrado no Estado da Bahia, distribuídas nas ecorregiões de água doce Mata Atlântica Nordeste (NMA) e São Francisco (SFR). A riqueza de espécies foi maior na NMA (187 spp.), composta por diversas bacias costeiras, do que na SFR (134 spp.), composta pela bacia do rio São Francisco. Das 30 famílias registradas, as mais representativas foram Characidae e Rivulidae, com 53 e 48 espécies, respectivamente. O estado de conservação de 214 espécies foi avaliado e 33 (15%) destas foram classificadas em alguma categoria de ameaça da IUCN. Destas, 11 foram classificadas como vulneráveis (VU), 12 em perigo (EN) e 10 criticamente em perigo (CR). A maioria das espécies ameaçadas (n = 14) pertence à família Rivulidae. O elevado número de espécies ameaçadas na NMA: (n = 23) está associado ao alto endemismo das espécies com distribuição restrita e aos impactos da ocupação humana ao longo da região costeira. Na SFR, a maioria das espécies ameaçadas é de peixes anuais, que estão localmente desaparecendo devido à degradação crescente de seus habitats temporários.

Abstract: This work was carried out from the assessment of the conservation status of the freshwater ichthyofauna from Bahia State. The inventory data and species distribution were obtained from the specialized scientific literature and representative ichthyological collections. A total of 281 native species was recorded in Bahia State, distributed in the Northeastern Mata Atlantica (NMA) and São Francisco (SFR) freshwater ecoregions. There was a larger number of species in the NMA (187 spp.), composed by several coastal basins, than in the SFR (134 spp.), composed by São Francisco river basin. Among the 30 families recorded, Characidae and Rivulidae were the most representative, with 53 and 48 species, respectively. The conservation status of 214 species was assessed and 33 of them (15%) were included in the IUCN threat categories. Of these, 11 species were classified as vulnerable (VU), 12 as endangered (EN), and 10 as critically endangered (CR). Most threatened species (n = 14) belongs to the family Rivulidae. The larger number of threatened species in the NMA: (n = 23) is mainly related to the high endemism of restricted-range species associated with the human occupation impacts along the coastal regions. In the SFR, most of threatened species are annual killifishes, which are locally disappearing due to increasing degradation of their temporary habitats.

RESUMO Uma espécie nova de Astyanax de tributários do rio de Contas, Bahia, Brasil, é descrita. A espécie nova difere das congêneres por ter três séries horizontais de escamas entre a linha lateral e a origem da nadadeira pélvica e margem distal do terceiro infraorbital distintamente separada dos ramos vertical e horizontal do pré-opérculo, deixando uma ampla área sem ossos superficiais. A espécie nova difere, ainda, da maioria das congêneres pela presença de ganchos ósseos em todas as nadadeiras de machos maduros. Particularmente das congêneres que ocorrem nas drenagens da Ecorregião Mata Atlântica Nordeste, difere ainda por ter a maior altura do corpo imediatamente anterior à origem da nadadeira dorsal, 34-37 escamas perfuradas na linha lateral, presença de uma mancha umeral conspícua, verticalmente alongada, ultrapassando ventralmente a linha lateral e uma faixa escura mediana lateral larga, estendendo-se da área clara após a mancha umeral até o fim dos raios medianos caudais e formando uma mancha inconspícua no pedúnculo caudal.

ABSTRACT A new species of Astyanax from tributaries of the rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species differs from congeners by having three horizontal series of scales from lateral line to pelvic-fin origin and the distal margin of third infraorbital distinctly separated from vertical and horizontal limbs of preopercle, leaving a broad area not covered by superficial bones. The new species further differs from most congeners by the presence of bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Particularly from congeners occurring in rivers of the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion, it further differs by having the highest body depth just anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, 34-37 pored lateral line scales, a vertically elongated conspicuous dark humeral blotch reaching below the lateral line and a conspicuous dark wide midlateral stripe extending from the clear area on the rear of the humeral blotch to the end of middle caudal-fin rays and forming an inconspicuous blotch on caudal peduncle.

RESUMO Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis foi descrita de um pequeno riacho na Ilha de Itaparica, Estado da Bahia, Brasil, e tem sido amostrada em outros rios costeiros nos estados da Bahia e Sergipe. Um amplo exame do material tipo e exemplares recentemente coletados resultou na redescrição aqui apresentada. A presença de uma mancha umeral, a ausência de pseudotímpano e aspectos da conservação de H. itaparicensis são brevemente discutidos. Dados obtidos da descrição original, de parátipos e topótipos de H. sergipanus revelaram ampla sobreposição com H. itaparicensis e ausência de características morfológicas diagnósticas que sustentem o reconhecimento de H. sergipanus como espécie válida. Assim, H. sergipanus é considerada sinônimo júnior de H. itaparicensis. Nós enfatizamos a necessidade de examinar grandes amostras das populações e do material tipo de congêneres semelhantes para evitar a proposição indevida de nomes novos de espécies.

ABSTRACT Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis was originally described from a small stream in the Itaparica coastal island, Bahia State, Brazil, and has been sampled in several coastal rivers draining Bahia and Sergipe States. Broad examination of type material and recently collected specimens resulted in the redescription provided herein. The presence of one humeral blotch, absence of pseudotympanum, and conservation aspects of H. itaparicensis are briefly discussed. Data obtained from the original description, paratypes and topotypes of H. sergipanus showed broad overlap with H. itaparicensis and absence of morphological diagnostic features supporting the recognition of H. sergipanus as a valid species. Thus, H. sergipanus is considered as junior synonym of H. itaparicensis. We emphasize the need of examining large population samples and type material of similar congeners to avoid improper propositions of new specific names.

RESUMO Embora estudos prévios sobre sistemática e biogeografia representam um avanço no conhecimento da tribo Glandulocaudini, nenhum foi baseado em evidência molecular. Assim, a primeira hipótese de relações para a tribo com base em uma análise multilocus é apresentada, incluindo todos os gêneros e a maioria das espécies válidas. Sequências de DNA de Glandulocauda caerulea e Mimagoniates sylvicola foram analisadas pela primeira vez. Uma análise de relógio molecular foi utilizada para estimar a origem de Glandulocaudini e datas aproximadas de eventos cladogenéticos dentro do grupo. Glandulocaudini foi recuperada como monofilética. Nenhuma hipótese recuperou Glandulocauda como monofilético, uma vez que G. melanopleura é irmã de Lophiobrycon weitzmani e G. caerulea está proximamente relacionada a Mimagoniates. As relações dentro deste último gênero foram resolvidas. Os resultados do relógio molecular indicam que Glandulocaudini originou-se durante o Mioceno, com diversificação dentro do grupo ocorrendo desde o Neogeno até o Pleistoceno. Estes resultados corroboram a hipótese da sua origem no escudo cristalino brasileiro, com a subsequente ocupação das drenagens costeiras atlânticas. Aparentemente, as flutuações pleistocênicas do nível do mar podem ter moldado o padrão de distribuição de algumas espécies em Glandulocaudini.

ABSTRACT Although former studies on systematics and biogeography represent a progress on the knowledge of the tribe Glandulocaudini, none was grounded on molecular evidence. Thus, the first hypothesis of relationships for the tribe based on a multilocus analysis is presented, including all genera and most of the valid species. DNA sequences of Glandulocauda caerulea and Mimagoniates sylvicola were analyzed for the first time. A molecular clock analysis was used to estimate the origin of the Glandulocaudini and the approximate timing of cladogenetic events within the group. Glandulocaudini was recovered as monophyletic. No hypothesis recovered Glandulocauda as monophyletic, since G. melanopleura is sister to Lophiobrycon weitzmani while G. caerulea is closely related to Mimagoniates. The relationships within the latter genus were resolved. The molecular clock results indicate the origin of the Glandulocaudini during the Miocene with diversification in the group occurring from Neogene to Pleistocene. These results corroborated the hypothesis that its origin took place on the Brazilian crystalline shield with the subsequent occupation of the Atlantic Coastal drainages. Apparently, Pleistocene sea-level fluctuations might have shaped the distribution pattern of some species in Glandulocaudini.

Duas novas espécies de Characidium , umada bacia do rio Pardo e outrada bacia do rio Paraguaçu, Bahia, Brasil, são descritas. A primeira espécie novadistingue-se das congêneres por ter traços verticais pretos e conspícuos nas laterais do corpo, formados pela concentração de melanóforos ao longo da margem posterior das escamas. A espécie difere ainda da maioria das congêneres pela presença de faixa preta conspícua em forma de 3 na nadadeira caudal e istmo não coberto por escamas.A outra espécie nova se distingue das congêneres por ter manchas dorsais irregulares alternando alongamento para um ou outro lado do corpo, a maioria não conectada às manchas laterais. A espécie pode ser ainda caracterizada pela ausência de manchas ou barras conspícuas nas nadadeiras e pela presença de dimorfismo sexual secundário, tais como nadadeiras pélvicas dos machos maduros mais longas que em fêmeas e com espinhos ósseos.

Two new species of Characidium , onefrom the rio Pardo basin, and anotherfrom the rio Paraguaçu basin, Bahia, Brazil, are described. The first new speciesis distinguished from its congeners by having conspicuous black vertical traces on body, formed by the concentration of melanophores along posterior margin of scales. The species further differs from most congeners by the presence of a conspicuous 3-shaped black blotch on the caudal fin and isthmus not covered by scales. The other new species is distinguished from congeners by having irregular dark blotches on dorsum alternating elongation to one or the other side of body, usually not connected to lateral blotches. The species can be further characterized by the absence of conspicuous blotches or bars on fins and the presence of secondary sexual dimorphism, such as pelvic fins of mature males longer than in females and with bony hooks.

A ecorregião Mata Atlântica Nordeste (NMAF) inclui parte das drenagens costeiras do leste do Brasil, tem alto grau de endemismo de peixes e grande significado biogeográfico. Um levantamento taxonômico da ictiofauna de água doce de 25 drenagens da ecorregião NMAF e uma análise biogeográfica utilizando o método de Análise de Parcimônia de Endemismo (PAE) foram realizados. Um total de 192 espécies nativas foi listado. O método PAE foi aplicado a 24 bacias e 37 espécies, resultando em cinco diagramas de áreas igualmente parcimoniosos. O diagrama de consenso estrito indica a existência de dois grupos de bacias principais ao longo da ecorregião NMAF. Estes grupos foram denominados: Grupo Norte e Grupo Centro-Sul. O Grupo Centro-Sul apresenta uma politomia basal composta por dois grupos (Grupo Centro e Grupo Sul) mais a bacia do rio Itapemirim. O Grupo Norte é formado por oito drenagens entre o rio Sergipe e o rio Paraguaçu, o Grupo Centro por cinco drenagens entre o rio Cachoeira e o rio Jequitinhonha e o Grupo Sul por nove drenagens entre o rio Buranhém e rio Doce. Comentários sobre a distribuição das espécies e a fauna compartilhada com ecorregiões adjacentes são fornecidos. Apresentamos também uma comparação da hipótese de relação aqui obtida com filogenias publicadas para alguns táxons relevantes ao presente estudo.

The Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion (NMAF) includes part of the eastern Brazilian coastal drainages, has high level of fish endemism and great biogeographic significance. A taxonomic inventory of freshwater fishes from 25 drainages of the NMAF ecoregion and a biogeographic analysis using the Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) method were carried out. A total of 192 native species was listed. The PAE method was applied to 24 basins and 37 species, resulting in five equally parsimonious area diagrams. The strict consensus diagram indicates the existence of two main groups of basins throughout the NMAF ecoregion. These groups were denominated: North Group and Central-South Group. The Central-South Group shows a basal polytomy composed by two Groups (Central Group and South Group) plus the rio Itapemirim basin. The North Group is composed by eight drainages from the rio Sergipe to the rio Paraguaçu, the Central Group by five drainages from the rio Cachoeira to the rio Jequitinhonha, and the South Group by nine drainages from the rio Buranhém to the rio Doce. Comments about the species distribution and the fish fauna shared with adjacent ecoregions are provided. We also present a comparison of the hypothesis of river relationships proposed herein with published phylogenetic hypotheses that include taxa relevant to this study.

Uma espécie nova de Hyphessobrycon Durbin é descrita dos tributários do rio Grande (bacia do rio São Francisco) que drenam a leste a Serra Geral de Goiás, das bacias dos rios São Domingos (bacia do alto rio Tocantins) e rio do Sono (bacia do médio rio Tocantins). Hyphessobrycondiastatos pode ser diagnosticada de seus congêneres pela ausência de mancha umeral, 15-18 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, 1-3 dentes maxilares cônicos ou tricuspidados, uma mancha escura relativamente bem definida no pedúnculo caudal e alongamento das nadadeiras dorsal e anal em machos maduros. O significado biogeográfico da distribuição da espécie nova é avaliado e discutido.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin is described from tributaries of the rio Grande (rio São Francisco basin) draining east to the Serra Geral de Goiás, of the rio São Domingos (upper rio Tocantins basin) and rio do Sono basins (middle rio Tocantins basin). Hyphessobrycondiastatos can be diagnosed from its congeners by the absence of humeral spot, 15-18 branched anal-fin rays, 1-3 maxillary conical to tricuspid teeth, a relatively well-defined dark caudal-peduncle spot, and elongation of dorsal- and anal-fin rays in mature males. The biogeographical significance of the distribution of the new species is evaluated and discussed.

Characidium samurai, uma espécie nova de Crenuchidae aparentemente endêmica das bacias do rio das Almas e rio Vermelho, Bahia, Brasil, é aqui descrita. A espécie nova difere das demais espécies do gênero, exceto C. lanei, por apresentar uma faixa lateral escura ao longo da cabeça e corpo, particularmente larga desde área após a cabeça até final do pedúnculo caudal (largura de 1,5 ou 2 escamas) e pela ausência de barras ou manchas escuras na metade ventral do corpo. Characidiumsamurai difere de C. lanei por ter faixa lateral com bordas retas (vs. faixa lateral com bordas relativamente irregulares devido à presença de manchas projetando-se dorsal ou ventralmente), nadadeira anal ii,7-8 (vs. ii,6) e 4 séries de escamas acima da linha lateral e 4 abaixo (vs. 5/3). Difere ainda das congêneres por uma série de características, que inclui istmo completamente coberto por escamas, linha lateral completa com 34-37 escamas perfuradas, 9 escamas na linha transversal, 14 séries de escamas ao redor do pedúnculo caudal, nadadeira anal ii,7-8 e ausência de faixas ou manchas escuras nas nadadeiras, exceto por uma faixa inconspícua na nadadeira dorsal. A presença de pseudotímpano é discutida em quatro espécies de Characidium.

Characidium samurai, a species of the family Crenuchidae apparently endemic to rio das Almas and rio Vermelho basins, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species is readily distinguishable from its congeners, except C. lanei, by having a dark lateral band along the head and body that is particularly broad from the rear of the head to the end of the caudal peduncle (1.5 or 2 scales wide) and by the absence of dark bars or blotches on the ventral half of the body. Characidium samurai differs from C. laneiby having the lateral band with straight borders overall (vs.lateral band with somewhat irregular borders due to blotches extending dorsally or ventrally), anal fin ii,7-8 (vs. ii,6), and 4 horizontal scale rows above the lateral line and 4 below (vs. 5/3). It further differs from congeners by a series of features, including isthmus completely covered by scales, lateral line complete with 34-37 perforated scales, 9 scales on the transversal line, 14 scale rows around the caudal peduncle, anal fin ii,7-8, and the absence of dark bars or spots on the fins, except by a faded dorsal-fin bar. The presence of pseudotympanum in four species of Characidium is discussed.

A bacia do Recôncavo Sul faz parte das drenagens costeiras do Leste do Brasil, está quase inteiramente incluída na região do Baixo Sul do Estado da Bahia, é limitada ao norte e noroeste pela bacia do rio Paraguaçu e ao sul e sudoeste pelo rio de Contas. No presente estudo, um total de 41 espécies de peixes estritamente de água doce foi registrado, pertencentes a 28 gêneros, 12 famílias e seis ordens (18 Characiformes, 13 Siluriformes, cinco Perciformes, duas Cyprinodontiformes, duas Gymnotiformes e uma Synbranchiformes). Foram encontradas dez espécies possivelmente ainda não descritas, quatro espécies endêmicas e quatro introduzidas na área de estudo. Uma espécie presente na área está ameaçada de extinção. Uma chave de identificação para as espécies conhecidas para o Recôncavo Sul é apresentada, assim como comentários sobre a taxonomia e distribuição de algumas espécies. Devido à diversidade comparativamente alta e condições ambientais relativamente preservadas, a bacia do rio das Almas é indicada como uma área chave para conservação.

The Recôncavo Sul basin is a portion of the coastal river drainages of Eastern Brazil almost entirely included in the "Baixo Sul" region of Bahia State, and is limited at its northern and northwestern borders by the rio Paraguaçu basin and at its southern and southwestern borders by the rio de Contas basin. In this study a total of 41 strictly freshwater fish species were recorded, belonging to 28 genera, 12 families, and six orders (18 Characiformes, 13 Siluriformes, five Perciformes, two Cyprinodontiformes, two Gymnotiformes, and one Synbranchiformes). Ten possibly undescribed, four endemic, and four introduced species were recorded in the area of study. One species occurring in the area is considered threatened with extinction. An identification key to the species known for the Recôncavo Sul is provided, as well as comments about the taxonomy and distribution of some species. Due to its comparatively high diversity and relatively pristine condition the rio das Almas drainage is suggested as a key area for conservation.

Uma espécie nova de Hyphessobrycon Ellis é descrita de afluentes do alto rio de Contas, Bahia, Brasil. A espécie nova pode ser diagnosticada de suas congêneres por ter corpo baixo, uma faixa escura larga na lateral do corpo que se estende fracamente pelos raios medianos caudais, ausência de mancha umeral e coloração alaranjada a avermelhada em vida.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Ellis is described from tributaries of the upper rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil. The new species can be diagnosed from its congeners by having low body depth, a broad black stripe along lateral of body that extends weakly through median caudal-fin rays, absence of humeral spot and orange- to reddish life coloration.
